Tainted and Crorepati Candidates
  • With a net worth of Rs 16 crore, Congress' Ajay Maken is the richest chief ministerial candidate this time While Maken is richer — his office claims his wealth has risen from his share in the family inheritance after his father's death — Kejriwal has been on the wrong side of law many more times. He has 10 cases against him to Maken's one.
  • However, Congress candidate from Okhla, Asif Mohd Khan, tops the list with 12 cases, 11 of which are pending. He has been charged with attempt to murder, dacoity, assaulting a public servant, rioting and unlawful assembly.
  • Shoaib Iqbal, also of Congress, has mentioned 11 cases lodged against him. The Matia Mahal ex-MLA has been charged with assaulting a public servant, rioting, cheating, and forgery.
  • Manjinder Singh Sirsa of Akali Dal, who's filed his candidature from Rajouri Garden, faces nine cases with charges including attempt to murder and rioting. Sirsa, however, is also the richest candidate in the capital with a net worth of Rs 239 crore.
  • Another high net worth candidate, Pramila Tokas, who is AAP's choice from RK Puram, has declared her family's wealth amounts to Rs 30 crore.
  • Other prominent crorepati candidates are Sharmistha Mukherjee (Rs 2.9 crore), Haroon Yusuf (Rs 3.7 crore), Jagdish Mukhi (Rs 4.8 crore) and Krishna Tirath (Rs 11.87 crore).
  • Not every candidate is well off. AAP's Rakhi Birla, who filed her nomination from Mangolpuri, has a net worth of Rs 18,500. Manish Sisodia, senior AAP member fighting from Patparganj, is worth Rs 16.9 lakh. BJP's Nupur Sharma, who'll be taking on Kejriwal in New Delhi, has declared her total assets along with those of her family to be Rs 14.8 lakh.
  • There are many candidates who are not well known but have jumped into the poll fray despite their modest means. Nand Kishor Jha, for instance, who's hoping to fight from Rithala on a Rashtriya Bahujan Hitay Party ticket, has declared a net worth of just Rs 5,000.
